Geoff Smith

Geoff is passionate about the wonder of architecture and empowering people with design. He enjoys working in a team to solve design challenges.

Geoff co-founded Shu Architects with Claire in 2019. He is celebrating 25 years of post qualification experience. Early in his career, Geoff worked for 2 years in Japan with the Japanese practice, Atelier Zo. He developed his professional experience with Re-Format architects in Hampshire, qualifying as an architect in 1999, before moving to Bristol and working for Quentin Alder architect to gain experience in conservation architecture including heritage re-use and low energy building.

Geoff first began working with Claire at Barlow Henley Architects where he helped to successfully deliver residential, commercial and marine projects in London and the South West. An interest in low-energy residential design led Geoff to become a certified Passivhaus designer.

Alongside his tole at Shu Architects, Geoff tutors at UWE for final year BA Architecture, he had taught and examined for Part 3 professional qualifications, and continues to be a practice mentor.

Geoff has an interest in Japanese Modernism, the architecture of the ‘everyday’ and improving his Japanese language skills. He also enjoys making his own clothes!
