We worked as both the architects and passive house designer to transform an underutilised agricultural barn into this  new 5 bedroom, certified Passivhaus home in Somerset. 

The building received Prior Approval under Class Q, which covers the conversion of agricultural buildings to residential. As a result the barn’s existing steel frame and insulated roof were required to be retained, and the new timber framed  house was built inside the existing building. This ‘box within a box’ approach  allowed the full Passivhaus standard to be achieved. The design also responded to this constraint, and the south and west elevations were set back from the existing eaves to provide solar shading to prevent overheating, and the thickness of the  walls was utilised to form window seats that framed the view.  

The design created a spacious family home, contextual to the landscape in which it sits. The open plan living space enjoys the vaulted roof of the barn, and the  large windows and doors create a seamless transition to the garden terrace. The  timber cladding also responds to the site location and will weather and soften  over time. 

The Barn was shortlisted for Future Leap’s Sustainable Building Award, 2022.
